The Claddagh was a fishing village just outside the walls of Galway city, on the west coast of Ireland. The people of the village were distinctive; they had there own king and type of dress.
In the 16th century, a boy named Richard Joyce was taken from the city by Moorish pirates and sold as a slave to a wealthy Moorish goldsmith who trained the lad in the craft.
His master took a great liking to richard, and offered him his freedom, which he very happily accepted. Returning to Galway, he prospered as a craftsman in gold and silver and the claddagh ring is one of his surviving works.
